Some historians credit this custom with the ancient Roman practice of carrying bunches of fragrant herbs and flowers on the wedding day to ward off evil spirits.
The Greeks carried ivy as a symbol of unending love. Modern custom has evolved so that tossing the bouquet is now a predictor of the next woman to be married and symbol or the bride embracing her new life. But in ancient times, it was believed a bride was especially lucky on her wedding day, so guest would often tear at the brides clothing to get a keepsake piece. Tossing th bouquet and garter were believed to prevent this mob scene and keep the crowd happy.
