Eternal love! Because of its circular shape, a ring has always been a symbol of unending love. The early Egyptians wore wedding rings made of woven rushes or hemp. Since these natural fibers wore out with use, the ring had to be constantly replaced. The ancient Greeks and Romans used more sturdy rings of iron or gold, which also displayed the wealth of the bridegroom.
In ancient cultures, the ring was placed on the third finger of the left hand because it was believed that the vein in that finger led directly to the heart. Most brides today still observe this practices, but in some parts of Europe the traditional ring finger is on the right hand. And in some communities around the world, the bride wars her ring on the left hand while engaged and then moves it to the right hand when married.
